Button, Button, Who’s Got the Button? (or The Ultimate Button Quest)

Today I am finishing up a “secret project” — a pattern that is going to be published by someone else, so I can’t talk about it yet.  And although I am excited about the project, the deadline is making me anxious, so I will be happy when it’s finished, boxed, and sent on its way.

The publisher wants buttons that are “natural, perhaps rustic.”  I hit all the yarn stores (and even JoAnn Fabrics) in a 20-mile radius of my home in search of buttons, but none were exactly right.  So yesterday morning my artist daughter, Amalia, and I headed off to the fashion district of New York City on The Ultimate Button Quest.

I had totally forgotten how much fun it can be to shop in the fashion district. An hour and a half in, an hour and a half shopping, an hour and a half out and…voila!   Just driving through Times Square makes the whole trip worth it!

The buttons for the secret project came to $7.35. Not bad, right?  But then I found buttons for three other projects I am currently working on.  And then there were the buttons that I have no plans for but couldn’t leave without buying (a growing button stash to go with my overflowing yarn stash).  By the time I left, I had spent well over $100 on buttons.

When you factor in the cost of getting there — the toll through the tunnel alone is $12 — the parking — $27 for just a bit over an hour — and the trip back – tolls again, and, well we had to stop at the Crate & Barrel Outlet store (Old family motto, “spend to save”), they did turn out to be very expensive buttons!

Of course, all these new buttons prompted me to think about how badly-organized my button stash is, so on the way back I bought clear ArtBin boxes to store them all in.  And while I only had eyes for buttons on our trip, my daughter came back with beads, beads, and more beads.  All in all, both of us had a great day.

Today, I’m back to writing and calculating and sewing on buttons.  And what beautiful buttons they are!
