A great basic sweater with comfort and style

boyfriend

I love the comfort of men’s sweaters, and I confess that I have absconded with several of my husband’s over the years.  Finally I decided it was time to design my own take on a menswear-styled cardigan.  Boyfriend is the result.

Roomy without being oversized, Boyfriend is a basic, practical sweater that can go anywhere, from a trip to town to a stroll on the beach.  And while it’s nice enough to wear out and about, it’s cozy enough to wrap yourself in while reading or knitting at home.

Boyfriend has a traditional fit, with 3-4 inches of positive ease. Knit it without buttons if you like, or make the button band wider for a more casual look.  Twin Rib edging and front panels of Lozenge pattern give this sweater tang and texture.

The sweater shown here was knit with Madelinetosh Tosh DK, an easy to care for, hand-dyed superwash merino that becomes very soft after its first washing.  It would also look great done in a traditional yarn that would really show off the pattern stitches.  Whatever yarn you choose, Boyfriend is sure to become your go-to sweater for warmth and comfort.

  1. Just finishing the back of boyfriend and wondering about pockets on the front. Any suggestions for what type might be suitable? OR how come pockets weren’t included in the original directions? Perhaps there’s a very good reason and perhaps I should know before I mess up the fronts. Using Madelinetosh dk and size 3 needles – got exact gauge with this. Thanks for any and all help. Love the sweater and the pattern.

    1. Hi Janet!

      Thanks for the note!

No real reason that there aren’t pockets in boyfriend. I was just trying to make an easy-to-knit pattern with a bit of a flare with the easy lozenge pattern stitch on the front! I think I would do simple, inside patch pockets, so as not to get too much thickness. I would work the linings before beginning the fronts (maybe 25 – 30 stitches) worked in stockinette st and put them on holders. Then I would work the front to the point where I wanted the pocket (probably the top of a pattern repeat) and where the pocket goes, perhaps work a few rows in rib st before BO. Then pick up the pocket lining to fill in where you BO the pocket top and keep working.

Hope that helps! PLEASE share a photo…
