Pattern Stitch

Chit Chat about the Last Few Weeks

The last few weeks I have been designing a new collection for winter 2014 for a fabulous yarn company (I can’t share everything, sorry!). It was quite an experience. We discussed a theme, a big box of yarn arrived at my studio, I took a week to design and swatch a dozen or so pieces, we discussed, picked, added some more ideas, I designed and swatched a little more and… we have a collection! Well I still need to do all of the work to create the garments and the patterns, but we have our six pieces picked out and a much larger box of yarn is on its way.

In putting together the collection, I spent a lot of time working through various pattern stitches — one of my favorite things to do! Here are a few of the ones I really enjoyed!

A few that I have used before and rediscovered:

And then a few that I have never used before.
Broken Rib I really enjoyed. It is quite beautiful on both sides and creates a nice, flat fabric. And, it is simple to knit!

Broken Rib (Even number of sts)
Row 1 (WS): *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: Knit.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pattern.

And then there is my favorite find — Shadow Check! This creates an amazing fabric: very dense, very textured, equally exciting but quite different on each side. And I love how it really pops when you use multiple strands of different weight yarn.

Row 1 (RS): Purl.
Row 2: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end.
Row 3: P1, *yo, sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from * to end. (The yo is taken over the top of the needle and held in back of the slipped st, then brought forward again for the next purl st.)
Row 4: K1, *sl 1 wyif dropping yo of previous row, k1; rep from * to end. (The yo is dropped in front of the slipped st, making 2 strands woven across each slipped st as it is slipped.)
Row 5: P1, *sl 1 wyib, p1; rep from * to end.
Row 6: K1, *sl1 wyif, k1; rep from * to end.
Rep Rows 1 – 6 for pattern.

You will definitely see a design using Shadow Check very soon!

Hope you enjoy my rambling.
