Editing (the big frog)

One of the hardest things for me to do as a hand-knitwear designer is to edit my work. It’s especially hard when I finish knitting a new design and then realize it just isn’t what I want it to be, which is what happened last summer with a new design.

When I began working on the design, I had tried to tackle three objectives at once:  I wanted to make it reversible, I wanted it to be knit from the top down with set-in sleeves, and I wanted to use colorwork.  In retrospect, it was probably not a good idea to try to incorporate all three design objectives in the same sweater.  But I am determined, and after multiple attempts I thought I had gotten it right.

I finished the body.  But I decided that I really didn’t like the back/front neckline, so I did the dreaded and cut and graphed a small panel so that it would be the way I wanted it.  Then I finished the sleeves.  But it still wasn’t right, so I hung the sweater on my dress form so I could step back from it and come up with another solution.

A month went by, and I continued to look at it without inspiration.  Eventually, I flung the sweater over a chair in my studio, tossed a few things over it so I couldn’t see it, and forgot about it…until last week, when I did a big straightening-up of my studio, and there it was again.

The good news was that since last summer I had figured out how to do a top-down with set-in sleeves, thanks to a great class on raglan sweater construction that I took with Ysolda at Stitches East.  But the bad news was that even though I still loved the colorwork, I really didn’t like the sweater. Not only was the collar still wrong, which I knew I could fix if I really wanted to, but the design was blah! And I don’t mean classic blah, I mean, “why would anyone want to knit this” blah.

So, this morning I bit the bullet and frogged the whole thing. It is amazing that in about 15 minutes you can undo what took weeks to do! But actually, I feel better. I already know what I am going to re-knit with this yarn, and I am so excited about it!  I am going to design a top-down, reversible, colorwork sweater…sound familiar?

  1. I have two sweaters I want to take apart and the use the yarn (wool) for something else. Of course I can frog, but how do I treat the yarn once its out? Just wind it up or what?
