Easy enough for most knitters, interesting enough to keep you knitting and cute enough to be beloved by all, PLAYTIME is my new go-to baby design for 3 – 18 month olds!
Inspired by the simple beauty and utility of Japanese knitwear design, PLAYTIME has clean, garter stitch lines and is knit all-in-one piece from the top-down. Fun design elements include yoke increases reminiscent of pin wheels, a simple gusset in the back to ensure a good fit and slight a-line shaping on the bodice to provide extra space for diapers. And, with a bit of added color play, PLAYTIME is transformed into 3 wholly different looks…
I love this design so much, I have knit 5 of them so far!
The original (top photo) was knit in Madeinetosh Pashima speckled yarn in color Holi Festival.
While I absolutely loved the finished cardi, I wanted to see what it would look like knit in a solid yarn, so I knit a solid version in Crave Yarn Caravan in color Authenticity (second photo) ….
Then I thought about color-play and used YOTH Little Brother in colors Dates and Mango to create the color-blocked version (third photo) …
And, finally, I worked with the remnants of yarn from my COLOR MY STRIPES in Crave Yarn Linea in colors Bibliophile, Namaste, Toe Shoes, Zozobra, Antilles and Golden Hour to create a striped yoke version (fourth photo).
I could not be happier with the results!
Oh yes, there is a bit of seaming on the inside seam of the sleeves, which frankly, scared me a bit, as I had not seamed garter stitch in a quite some time. But a few clicks and I found a fantastic tutorial by Purl Soho which made it as simple as can be!
