Introducing DYER ISLAND… all proceeds will be donated to Animal Emergency and Specialty Care in Portland, Maine

I don’t have a lot of time to write about DYER ISLAND because our lab, Ash, is critically ill. But as I sat in the waiting room for the 3rd day waiting to hear how his blood work and lab tests looked, I decided that I really wanted to do something to show the people here at Animal Emergency and Specialty Care in Portland how much we appreciate all of their help. Since DYER ISLAND was all ready to launch, I decided to launch and donate all of the proceeds to the clinic.

Versaci Knits-29

DYER ISLAND is very special to me for several reasons. The idea for the design started with 2 sweaters that my mother’s best friend knit for her back in the 1960’s that she loved and wore into her 90’s. They are both knit in Broken Rib and used yarn sourced in Maine, where my mother summered on Dyer Island. I still have the sweaters and cherish them, although my mother was smaller than me, so they don’t fit me quite as nicely as they did her.

DYER ISLAND is is an everyday, classic cardigan with pockets and clean lines. is a take off of my vest pattern SUMMER FOG. Translated to a long-sleeves sweater, I trimmed the ease to 4”/10cm and I added pockets on both the right and left FRONTS. It is knit in Wing and a Prayer Taconic Twist, which I bought at Squam last year. The yarn is from the sheep on the farm and the yarn is naturally dyed by Tammy, who owns the far in upstate NY. Tammy will be at the Vermont Wool and Sheep Festival on September 29th and 30th and will be bringing many colors of Taconic Twist with her. It is a beautiful, blended wool an the natural colors are fabulous! She will also have my sweater, if you want to see it in person and try it on!

If you can’t make it to Vermont Wool and Sheep, a great substitute yarn is Kelbourne Woolen’s AndorraIt is also a wonderful blended fiber yarn and will knit up just as beautifully as Taconic Twist. In fact, I have Sunshine Yellow in my stash and plan to knit a DYER ISLAND for my daughter in it. KAL anyone?
