CAMPFIRE: a new shawl pattern! 100% of pattern sales donated

100% of pattern sales will be donated to  Vinalhaven Community Outreach!

Hello Friends!

These are different times, so I am not offering a special introductory discount on CAMPFIRE. Instead I have teamed up with PortFiber in Maine and we are making donations to 2 important non-profit organizations. Here is the story!

OK, I’m not typically a campfire kind of person, but this summer I was so excited to be attending the Medomak Fiber Arts Retreat in Washington, Maine! I have been following this retreat for a number of years and, finally, my schedule allowed me to go. But the world had a different idea and, yesterday, the retreat was cancelled!

I was most excited to take classes from some of my favorite fiber friends, spend time with old and new friends around a campfire and to support the wonderful Casey of PortFiber’s Cashmere People Yarns. So, in honor of the retreat, I designed this cozy and graphic triangle shawl, CAMPFIRE, which is now available to buy on Ravelry or LoveCrafts!CAMPFIRE is a traditional triangle shawl knit in the most wonderful cashgora fiber (crossbreed of Angora (mohair) and cashmere-producing goats), Cashmere People Yarns. Ethically sourced and environmentally conscious, Cashmere People’s Yarns are handspun and hand-dyed by women in Afghanistan and Tajikistan — each label carries a photograph and name of the woman who produced your skein. Then the yarn is marketed through a collaboration with Casey of PortFiber in Portland, Maine.

While I had intended to launch the shawl at camp this summer, with camp cancelled, I decided to launch the pattern now, in hopes of helping 2 very needy communities in Maine! To start with, I am donating 100% CAMPFIRE pattern sales to Vinalhaven Community Outreach, a non-profit organization that helps individuals in need on the island. The island of Vinalhaven, with a year round population of less than 2,000, is a major supplier of lobster, both in the US and abroad. With the shut down of virtually all countries, many supply routes and most restaurants, the price of lobster has plummeted. In addition, Maine will continue to require a 14 day quarantine of all people coming into the state through August, essentially ending all summer vacation traffic.

At the same time, Casey is donating 20% of the proceeds from May sales of Cashmere People Yarns to Full Plates Full Potential, a non-profit in Maine that helps fund breakfast and lunch for Maine children. With schools closed, it is a particularly important time to be supporting families who are experiencing food insecurity.

So, please, if you can, consider buying CAMPFIRE or gifting it to a knitter who might need a little extra hug AND head over to PortFiber and buy the 3 skeins of Cashmere People Yarns Cashgora Sport to knit it up! I used the colors Midnight, Marigold and Pamirs, but you cans also see other color combinations on the CAMPFIRE projects page and I am sure that Casey would be more than happy to help find the perfect colorway for you! My next one will be in colors Sanguine, Tourmaline and Pamirs… Or better yet, buy 3 skeins of their Cashmere Sport… …even more amazing!CAMPFIRE is a traditional triangle shawl with some fun, texture twists! Faux baubles, a bit of lacework, some brioche all make this an interesting knit. And if you need any help, we will start a thread in the VERSACKINTS knitters group on Ravelry, where some of the wonderful women who helped me test knit (and who were hoping to join me at the Modomak Retreat in July) and I can help! Hopefully we will all be able to unite at Medomak next year!!!
