Hello Friends!

It is finally the Ides of March, which means that spring is just around the corner. Last week, in Princeton, we had a string of days above 60 degrees and I was able to meet up with a good friend and knit in her backyard. What a pleasure! Unfortunately, today is back to freezing temps, so no outdoor knitting today…

Enough about the weather, today I want to introduce you to the fun to knit, color-bursting GAMUT shawl!  First, a bit about the name!

In color reproduction, including computer graphics and photography, the gamut, or color gamut is a certain complete subset of colors which can be accurately represented in a given circumstance. If you work with graphic design, you will be familiar with RGB color space and CMYK color space; both color gamut representations. Looking at the knitted shawls and at the graphic above, you can see how GAMUT got its name!2 c

The more color the better for GAMUT, so it is a great vehicle for self-striping yarn (but you could use a plied yarn or even just 2-different colors for a little different look).

The shawl uses 2 different colorways and a simple textured pattern to produce its stunning color celebration! It is an easy, rhythmic knit that can be knit in a range of yarn weights (shown in sport-weight yarn on the left and worsted-weight yarn on the right). And the color changes are an absolute delight as you move from end-to-end.

There are so many stunning, self-striping yarns out there. I chose to work with one of my favorites, Spincycle Yarns, which I bought from my local yarn shop — Wild Hand in Philadelphia, in both Dyed in the Wool and in Dream Stateusing different needle sizes! Shown in the first photo on left, Dyed in the Wool in colors End of Summer and The Family Jewels and on right, Dream State in colors Midsommar and Good Omen. In the second photo, Dyed in the Wool in colors in colors Stay Out of the Forest and Castaway.

The amazing thing about Spincycle Yarns is that 2-colors are plied together and the single strands change color as they go. This means that when you are working 2 colorways at the same time, you are actually working in 4 different colors. This is why you get the gamut-look in each shawl!

GAMUT, as shown, uses 2 skeins each of 2 different colorways of Spincycle (a total of 4 skeins) or approx 800 yds/725m of sport/heavy fingering weight yarn or 600yds/650m of worsted weight yarn, but the exact amount of yarn or weigh isn’t critical. GAMUT can be knit to any size based on the quantity of yarn you have. And the weight of yarn and corresponding needle size that works for you!

Here are a few other yarn choices that some of my favorite shops have suggested:

  • Janet at String Theory in Glen Elyn, Illinois is working with a yarn I have never used, Entropy DK from Feederbrook Farm, a small, sustainable farm in Maryland.
  • Natalie at Knitting Off Broadway in Fort Wayne is working with Primrose Yarn Co’s Homeland Sport (it also comes in a worsted-weight).
  • Loop Yarn in Philadelphia carries the stunning Noro Ito [100% wool; 437yds/200g skein]. A lovely worsted-weight self striping yarn from Japan.
